In August of 1977, the Woodward Auto Group purchased its first General Motors franchise in Goose Bay: Labrador Motors Limited. Included in the deal was the purchase of other affiliated companies, including Labrador Leasing (Tilden) Ltd. and Valley Motors Ltd. Since then, it has opened franchises in Labrador City (1984) and under the Woodward Motors Limited banner: Bay Roberts (March 1992) and St. Anthony (December 1989). General Motors sub-agencies were also added to the Group in L'Anse Au Clair (October 1994), Hawke's Bay (December 1998), and in Carbonear (July 2004).
In May of 1996, the old Petro Canada building in Deer Lake was purchased to house Woodward Auto Sales. A new building was later constructed and opened in September 1997 on the Trans-Canada Highway to house a network head office for the sale of rental and used vehicles. A sub-outlet was also opened in Stephenville in July 1998 to meet the increasing demand for used vehicles, which was later moved to a larger facility in 2008.
In November of 2009 when the top giants in the automotive industry restructured, the General Motors franchise in Bay Roberts was awarded the Chevrolet brand in addition to their existing GMC and Buick lineup, previously held solely by its competitor. And in March of 2010, the Woodward Group also purchased another General Motors franchise in Port Aux Basques, strengthening the presence of the Woodward Auto division across the entire province of Newfoundland.
Mr. Melvin Woodward was always dedicated to providing urban services in rural Newfoundland and Labrador, and now his two sons Peter Woodward and Melvin C. Woodward continue with the same drive and dedication.
